What is the history of color guard? when and how did it start? Who created it?

I am doing my Senior research paper, and I am having problems finding info about the history of colorguard that has a copyright date on the website, otherwise I am not allowed to use it. I am also trying to find info about the competition of the sport, the dangers and risks of being in this sport, and also the techniques and the equipment used. please and thank you. And this "color guard" has to do with marching, tossing flags, rifles, sabers and so on. please and thank you. sorry for repeating that top paragraph, am new to this, but wanted to add this. 1. When you mentioned the history of the color guard I assumed you meant Color Guard--the four-man team that marches with the National Colors and the unit identification (Army, Navy, Air Force flags) flanked by guards. Color guards have been with us long before the Revolutionary War. School color guards and whatever sport that is engaged are altogether different and of no consequence to me.
  2. The equipment used: flags, sabres, rifles, sometimes batons. The same dangers and risks are invovled as with ballet, gymnastics, and dance, but also the risk of being hit with a piece of equipment. If you need information about some guard competitions you should go to www.wgi.org. WGI stands for Winter Guard International. Winterguard is just like colorguard, except that it's performed indoors during the winter-time.
