  3. Many people think they just pick up a book and read the words. First of all, get a book. This can be a book you want to read, or a book assigned for school or work, or even a book you're reading because someone you know loves it. Try for something you're interested in, as it will be easier to read. Once you have your book, go through the steps you would when choosing a book to read (such as reading the inside of the jacket and the author info). It will help prepare you for what the book is about and you'll be able to sink in a little more. Start reading. No matter how good the book is, or how boring, don't skip over parts or read too quickly. You want to absorb each word and understand every sentence. That's what real reading is, understanding the words on the page. Keep track of what you've read. Mark your page when you need to put the book down. (see tips) It's annoying to delay your reading with a page search every time you start to read. Make an effort. This step is most deceptive. Real reading is trying hard to understand, to immerse yourself, rather then just roboticly drudging through. If you are getting bored, try to stick with your book. Sometimes there will be a lull in the action or romance or whatever the book is about, but give the book a chance to regain your attention. Be careful how you mark your book! This is especially true with library and borrowed books. It's very annoying to find a book that is dog-eared and has a cracked spine from being laid open and face-down. Use a bookmark, and something decent for that bookmark; not just some piece of junk that could harm the book. Always try to keep a pocket dictionary or a reader's dictionary with you when you read any book. It might seem easy, but one misunderstood word can make you miss the entire point or plot of the book. Taking good care of books and keeping bookmarks and dictionaries with you won't make you seem like a nerd, it will make you seem well-read and literate. Books can be a best friend. They can take you to places that you may never see. They can introduce you to things you may never know... but do you know how to read them in order to get the fullest enjoyment possible? This should help. [edit] Steps Find a book. Look in the library or in one of the larger bookstores. Search the shelves until you find a book that looks good. Read the first page to see how it reads. If you find yourself already engrossed, then buy it or check it out. Buy it and take it home. Do not start to read it, until you have the time. If you have to rush reading, because you have to do homework, or prepare dinner, it is best to wait until you are done. Set aside time to do nothing else but read, as it can be at times suspenseful, exciting and relaxing. Settle into a comfortable chair or get comfortable on the couch. Have a lamp on the back of you, lighting the area where you are reading. So that you do not have to get up soon after starting to read, make sure you have brought coffee, candy, popcorn, or any other refreshments you might want to have. Make sure the television is off and anything that could distract you is attended to. Start the book by turning the pages. Do not think about anything else, but what you read. Put yourself into the action or location within the story. Once you get totally engrossed it will be difficult to put the book down. Note that if you find your eyes closing, or if you feel tired, then place a bookmark into the page, shut the book and place it in a safe place. When tired, the mind wanders, and you will no longer enjoy or retain what you are reading. In speed reading, what most people do is they try to eliminate the voice you hear in your head. Hearing that voice is called "subvocalization." If you need to read fast, try to keep that going fast. If speed reading, eliminate it entirely. If you've got time to fritter away, it is recommended you keep it, because it really helps to let the words sink in. Read that last sentence again, students. When you start a book, and find you are not getting interested, read a few more pages. If you still feel bored by the storyline, put it away, and find a more engrossing book. Join a local library. You can order books as they are released, by your favorite author. Save money by not buying. Return the book after you have finished, and find another book. It might be hard to get into a book at first, and you might be tempted to give up and read another book. If you think the book is worth reading, keep trying and continue reading to get into the book...some books have better starts than others, but this doesn't make the whole book better. They have audio books to read while driving in the car. For long trips this can be great. Try to imagine the story in your head. If you're renting a book from your school's library, then keep it in your backpack every night after you read it so you won't forget to give it back when you're done with it. When you are reading a book, you sometimes feel you will never finish it or if you are a slow reader, follow these steps so you read you book quicker. Start by reading the first chapter as normal Leave the book and do something else for a while (T.V, computer etc.) Once you come back to the second chapter, give your self a set time to read , something like 10 minutes to half an hour, that you think you will read the next chapter in,or you could just pick a chapter you want to read to. When you have finished that chapter, read the next if you think you will finish it in time Carry on like this whenever you have time, and because you aren't reading loads at a time, you feel you have read it in less time If you like reading in bed before you go to sleep, instead of having a set time, just pick a chapter you want to get to and read away If you do set your self a time to read in and don't think you will read the next chapter in time, don't rush the book or you will miss important details, just go over the set time till you have finished that chapter.
