In what ways can senior citizens help to solve this problem ?
Dear Senior citizens, ever since the dawn of the satellite era of television and with the introduction of the information superhighway to the world wayback in the mid 90’s, a sudden and sharp rise in voyeurism has resulted which has in many ways been responsible for women and girls being looked upon as a mere sex object not only in advertisements on television but also on the streets where all females have to bear the brunt of eve-teasers, sex-maniacs and other emerging miscreants. In the name of music television, the audience is exposed to a lot nudity and skin show resulting in high libido among people in their pre-teens. The consequences are pre-marital sex, date rapes, molestation of minor by minors, other forms of sexual harassment of women and girls at their work places. The worst scenario is that certain paedophiles visit the internet for certain heinous purposes and try to trap innocent children visiting the net. There are many websites which openly discuss and solicit sex from children and also put up sadistic jokes for enjoyment by such perverts. The point which I am trying to make here is that is not high time that governments of all countries wake up to the menace being created through the misuse of modern media ? Are we waiting for statistics of sexual crimes to crop at a level when these things would have gone out of our hands? Can’t we make stronger laws to protect the dignity and modesty of women and children who are being abused daily in the name of emancipation and modernism.? Believe me! Incidents of eve-teasing and molestations of women and children are getting a casual treatment all over the world without an eyebrow being raised to the seriousness of such crimes and the devastating effects it can have on the victims. Perpetrators of such crimes are able to walk free after being arrested just because they are either children of top politicians or on the pretext that they were mentally ill or that they got too carried away by the level of voyeurism in the media. The time has now come for all of us to think together to fight this growing menace of over sexual exposure through the media. In what ways can senior citizens contribute towards creating an awareness to help youngsters from falling into the wrong hands ?

- i do see your point but, in all fairness, seniors have so many other problems health, finances, etc on ad on. i would find it very difficult to participate in any affirmative Acton in this regard. the only thing i can suggest is to contact your congressmen and Representatives if, you can find one that isn't participating in these activities. do you really think that anyone pays attention to us in this regard. they are all interested in the youth market because they feel that is where the money is and these folks will be around longer. sorry... and bring on the thumbs!
- You, Sir, will be crucified for this. Veritas odium parit! If you forgot your Latin, "Truth begats hatred". And that truth includes you and me. We will be shown movies of what life used to be, just before our lethal injection. Do you remember "Soylent Green? Charleton Heston? Coming soon to a hospital near you.
- No. You do not want government monitoring the Internet. If adults behaved as they should child sex crimes would virtually disappear. Seniors are grand parents. They can help by maintaining good strong family values of morality and ethics.
- I think a large number of senior citizens would like to participate and help but we have to think of ways and means to empower them and protect their identity and personal safety. As an important part of the society, they have the experience, available time and good intentions to do a good job but needed to be handled carefully and intelligently.
- I stopped reading after the first few sentences into your wall of text because your ideas have so many flaws that I don't know where to start. Satellite and the internet didn't turn women into sex objects, neither did the 90s for that matter. Women, as a gender, decided to make themselves sex objects. If you want to blame anyone for objectifying women look to the ladies of the 60s. They were the ones who moved away from the traditional image of a woman to one who was more free, confident, sexually empowered, provocative and glamorous. Don't blame the internet for something that was started decades before it's invention.
- As you get older you notice the changes in the world, and because we all try to resist change, we develop a lack of tolerance of those changes. The law currently protects minors from sexual crimes. The dignity and modesty of women and children is in the hands of those women and the parents Eve-teasing (I had to look it up, not a North American term) is sometimes due to restrictive laws, and cultural taboos, when restrictions are applied elsewhere. The times have changed, and what we did that our parents found too much, has now got us saying the same thing
- We certainly do not want government monitoring the internet. I think the key is in the homes and schools, and churches. Men and women of all ages have to stand up and be heard. Talk about it in the homes, schools, and churches. Write letters to government officials. Hold informational seminars re: the problem. Make it clear, in no uncertain terms, this is not something that is good for anyone and will not be tolerated. Punishment for pedophiles should be increased. Although I don't recommend violence, when I hear about a parent shooting and killing their son's or daughter's molester, I can certainly understand their actions.
- I can not add anything of value to the wisdom shown by Half Drawn Boy on this question. Read and read again his response. We are now harvesting the bitter weed that was planted in the sixties. To bad that those of us who did not join the beat generation also have to contend with the results of their stupidity.
- I live twenty miles from a sexual predator institution so I don't think they are just going free. The oldest patient is over 100 years old and was first caught in the 1930's. Sex crimes are not new. Teenage pregnancy is not new. Sex is not new.
- Sex is hardly a modern invention and modern technology is not responsible for its discovery.
- All anyone can do is to raise their kids to have values and if you do a good enough job they will raise their kids the same way. You can't do a lot about anyone else's kids or their parents either. I sent my kids to a small christian school where their classmates had parents who spent the bucks to make sure that they were getting a good education and hanging around other kids with parents that cared enough to do so as well. My daughter has her girls in a Christian home school program and they socialize with kids whose parents have the same attitudes about instilling values in their children. I am sorry for the kids who don't have parents that do this for them but raising your kids correctly is a full time job. And as a senior grandparent your job is to re enforce what your kids are teaching the grandchildren. You can't solve the problems of the world but by raising your own children correctly you become part of the solution rather than the problem.
- Half-Drawn Boy, I'm disappointed. It's true that technology has not caused this problem but has only made anything and everything more easily accessible, but don't blame it on women. We did not decide to "make ourselves" sex objects. We always have been sex objects and considered sexual property, and we only began to regain some independence during the 60s and 70s. Even then, it was a struggle (and sometimes still is) because single women, whether divorced or having decided not to marry, were considered suspect, along with any woman who chose a nontraditional career or hobby. A woman who stepped outside traditional female roles had her womanhood questioned because women were defined by their dependence on men. It was men who made us sex objects by assuming they owned us, and the only thing that changed with the coming of the internet was that the guys who usually spent their time looking at Playboy just found a new and more widely varied way to find their porn. As for the questioner's original question, I don't think there was any "sudden and sharp rise in voyeurism." A condition which has always been there just suddenly became more apparent. Things like rapes, premarital sex, and child molestation did not suddenly arise or increase, and they were not caused by the information superhighway. The media just made such things more visible to the public, whereas in the past they didn't make the news. The media have been changing over the years and become more competitive with each other for ratings, and thus their choice of material to cover has been increasingly sensationalistic. They have a saying, "If it bleeds, it leads." They want shocking stories which grab your attention. As for sexual criminals being able to walk free, that's an old problem with the laws which need changing and also has nothing to do with the information superhighway. Sexual predators have a high rate of recidivism (repeat offenses), they can't successfully be cured, and the laws don't provide for long enough sentences to keep them off the streets.
